Spurs gain second round pick, Dewayne Dedmon in trade with Heat

The Spurs brought a familiar face back into the fold Tuesday, agreeing to a deal with Miami for Dewayne Dedmon. How long Dedmon remains under the Spurs’ employ remains to be seen.

The Heat included a 2028 second-round pick along with Dedmon. The Spurs have an open roster spot plus ample salary cap space to absorb Dedmon’s $4.7 million contract.

The Spurs will send Miami cash considerations in the swap.

Dedmon, a 33-year-old center, played for the Spurs in 2016-17. He appeared in 76 games that season and averaged 5.1 points. Dedmon’s Spurs career ended unceremoniously, with a string of DNPs in the 2017 playoffs, and he signed with Atlanta the following season.

Dedmon found himself disgruntled and out of the rotation this season, his third with the Heat. He made NBA headlines in January, when he was ejected from a game while arguing with Miami coach Erik Spoelstra, who said the player’s actions as he left the floor were “unacceptable.”

Following the outburst, the Heat suspended Dedmon without pay for one game for conduct detrimental to the club.
