Strong protest after Khalistan supporters vandalize Indian High Commission in UK

At least one man has been arrested after the Indian High Commission in London was vandalized allegedly by the Khalistani extremists on Sunday. The incident prompted India to register its strong protest with the British government.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the senior-most UK diplomat in New Delhi was summoned to seek an explanation as to why there was a “complete absence of British security that allowed these elements to enter the mission premises.”

The MEA statement added that British deputy high commissioner Christina Scott was “reminded in this regard of the basic obligations of the UK Government under the Vienna Convention.”

“India finds unacceptable the indifference of the UK government to the security of Indian diplomatic premises and personnel in the UK. It is expected that the UK Government would take immediate steps to identify, arrest and prosecute each one of those involved in today’s incident, and put in place stringent measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents,” it said.

UK High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis also tweeted his response to the incident. “I condemn the disgraceful acts today against the people and premises of the @HCI_London – totally unacceptable,” Ellis tweeted.

This comes as the tricolor flying atop the Indian High Commission in London was grabbed at by a group of protesters waving separatist Khalistani flags and chanting pro-Khalistani slogans.

Officials from the mission said the “attempted but failed” attack had been foiled and that the tricolor was now flying “grander”. Though nobody was injured, the windows of the High Commission were broken, the Metropolitan Police statement said.

Videos showing shattered windows and men climbing the India House building went viral on social media. The footage showed an Indian official grabbing the flag from a protester through the first-floor window of the mission, while the protester is seen hanging off its ledge and waving a Khalistan flag before it is taken away.

While the protestors carried the yellow and black Khalistan flag, others were heard raising slogans seeking freedom for radical Sikh preacher and Khalistan sympathizer Amritpal Singh.
