India clinches victories in key U.N. bodies

Jagjit Pavadia re-elected to INCB for the third term

New York: India has secured multiple pivotal positions at the United Nations, marking a significant triumph as Jagjit Pavadia, India’s nominee, clinches a third consecutive term on the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) with the highest number of votes.

Pavadia’s re-election to the INCB spans from March 2025 to 2030, achieved through a secret ballot process amid intense competition.

“India remains steadfast in its commitment to actively engage in the discourse within these UN bodies, upholding the principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – the world is one family,” India’s permanent representative to the U.N. Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj said in a post on X.

India has also won election to various other UN bodies uncontested, including the Commission on the Status of Women for the 2025-2029 term, and the Executive Boards of the United Nations Children’s Fund, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Population Fund, and the United Nations Office for Project Services for the term 2025-2027.

Furthermore, India secures positions on the Executive Boards of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, and the World Food Programme, both for the 2025-2027 term.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) had recently conducted elections to fill vacancies in 17 subsidiary bodies, employing a mix of acclamation, secret ballot, and nomination processes.
