Long Island couple organizes eye camp in Amritsar

Amritsar: Former Commissioner of Nassau County Varinder Bhalla celebrated the life and legacy of his late father Jan 25 on his 50th death anniversary by organizing an eye camp for free eye exam and eyeglasses for the underprivileged in his native Amritsar, India. The event was conceptualized by his wife Ratna Bhalla, former Deputy Commissioner of Nassau County to mark the occasion.

 

The event was also marked by a langar, a community meal served to over 1000 people, and groceries distributed to the poor families in the area.

 

Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Member of Parliament in India, Om Parkash Soni, former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, and Sandeep Rishi, Commissioner of Amritsar also attended the event.

The Bhallas of Long Island also run AWB Food Bank, named after their mother Agya Wanti Bhalla, in New Delhi where surplus food from hotels, airlines and industry kitchens is distributed to the needy since 1991.
